The little FlyDubai Boeing 737 touched down in Dubai on that hot, heavy-aired august evening. It was only the second time I flew in my life, and yet I was going to do it for living from now on.
7 of us were welcomed by one of the welcoming people I guess, and were taken each to his accommodation. I was put in a hotel-apartment in the middle of nowhere. As the little, black van was driving me to my new home, I was struggling to find any similarity with the places I knew. There was no even smallest one.
The desert sand was all around, it felt like I was in a sauna even though it was night, and the apartment’s AC was set up to some freezing 19°C. It was a good example of how they function here, EVERYWHERE. From the sauna you go straight into a chiller, and vice-versa.
My apartment was huge and I shared it with another girl. I got a huge, A bedroom, had a small room with a built-in closet, and a bathroom. Heavy bordeaux colored curtains, with golden ropes tying them, made me feel like a princess in some old Arabic fairy-tale.
I closed my eyes overfilled with pictures of this new world. It was 5am when a call for the prayer woke me up from the nearby mosque. I was just lying there not realizing very well where I was. Little after, pale, whitish ball called “sun” here, started rising above the horizon.
Welcome to your new life Gina.
